White House pits immigration deal collapse as GOP vs. Border Patrol

The White House on Thursday branded the collapse of the bipartisan border security agreement as a Republican move against the Border Patrol, which approved the deal.

White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in a memo that the law enforcement situation at the U.S. southern border has become “more urgent” and the Border Patrol is asking Congress for more funding. .

“But Congressional Republicans continue to close the door in the face of the brave men and women at the border, emphasizing Donald Trump’s concerns that securing the border will harm his personal politics. “For years I’ve happily said yes to taking photos near the border,” Bates said. “Okay, D.H.S. [Department of Homeland Security] There is a lack of funding for removal efforts and capacity. ”

“Congressional Republicans are saying ‘no.’ They’re choosing Donald Trump, smugglers, and fentanyl traffickers over border law enforcement,” he added.

In remarks earlier this week, President Biden emphasized that the bill has the support of the National Border Patrol Council, a border protection union that supported President Trump in 2020. President Trump, who has expressed opposition to the bill, accused the bill of robbery. He accused him of trying to intimidate Republican lawmakers into opposing the bill for political reasons.

In his memo, Bates also claimed that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) had “ridiculed” the Border Patrol for supporting the bipartisan bill. when he said on FOX News“I think it has something to do with the salary structure listed in the bill.”

“Unfortunately, this has been a pattern for House Republicans, claiming in front of television cameras that they support law enforcement. But when it counts, they turn around and say ‘no.’ Vote,” Bates added.

Biden’s re-election campaign also claims that the collapse of the deal was because Republicans blocked resources for Border Patrol agents. The campaign on Wednesday accused Trump of obstructing resources sent to Border Patrol agents to deal with the situation.
