The Biden administration welcomed Hamas’s sudden declaration on Monday that it had accepted a ceasefire in Gaza, but the White House did not say exactly what terms Hamas had accepted.
Hamas announced an agreement on Monday with unspecified terms proposed by Egyptian and Qatari mediators. It comes just hours after Israel warned civilians to leave and launched an attack on Hamas in its last stronghold, Rafah, in the Gaza Strip.
Israel said Hamas does not appear to have agreed to the terms of the offer.
This left confusion as to whether there was an agreement or whether Hamas was pretending there was an agreement to stop Israel.
White House National Security Council Press Secretary John Kirby declined to speculate on the contents of the Hamas “agreement” during a Monday briefing.
I understand that you’re curious, and you’re asking all the right questions, and it’s all very fair, but I don’t want to say anything that would ruin this very delicate process. I hope you understand that this is something I absolutely do not want to do on stage. At risk. We are now at a critical stage. We received a response from Hamas.now [CIA] director [William] Burns is working with Israelis to assess and work through it. I mean, folks, I don’t know that this issue has ever been more sensitive than it is right now. And the worst thing we can do is start speculating about what’s inside.
Kirby told Fox News’ Jackie Heinrich that he didn’t know whether Hamas’ claims of a deal were a “trick.”
Asked about Israel’s decision to shut down Al Jazeera, a Qatar-backed channel that has served as a propaganda outlet for Hamas during the war, Kirby said that because “the work of independent journalism around the world is absolutely essential.” The United States said it opposed the move.
