White House Reinstalls Columbus Statue Vandalized by Activists

On Sunday, a Christopher Columbus statue was placed on the White House grounds near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, reversing the action taken by Black Lives Matter activists who dismantled the original in 2020.

This new statue is made from remnants of the monument that protestors toppled in Baltimore, Maryland, and subsequently tossed into the harbor, according to reports.

The initiative was backed by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO), the article noted.

“Originally revealed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, destroyed during the Civil War in 2020, and now restored by COPOMIAO and President Donald Trump, the Baltimore Columbus statue commemorates Italian-American history and culture here at the White House,” the organization mentioned, stating it aligns with the upcoming 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

The group indicated that local officials in Baltimore declined to erect the new statue publicly, prompting them to seek President Trump’s assistance.

Basil M. Russo, the COPOMIAO Chairman, commented:

Columbus statues have historically represented pride and identity for over 18 million Italian Americans. For more than a century, Columbus’ legacy helped Italian immigrants navigate prejudice and hardship, acting as a unifying symbol as they forged new lives here. Columbus Day itself emerged after the 1891 lynching of 11 Italian immigrants in New Orleans, which galvanized national efforts for Italian American acceptance and assimilation. This backdrop is key to understanding the significance of these monuments.

Footage from 2020 captured a protester, dressed in black, ready to topple the original statue, which stood in Little Italy.

The crowd erupted in cheer as the statue fell and shattered upon impact. It was disposed of at the harbor, with debris later retrieved.

One individual reflected on that moment, suggesting that protesters were imposing their agenda rather than participating in a constructive discussion.

Activists claimed that Columbus was culpable for acts of genocide and the exploitation of Native Americans.

In a 2020 piece for Breitbart News, author Robert Royal noted a “violent attitude” among those opposing Columbus.

The historical record is abundant and accessible, and for those genuinely interested in the truth, it could mitigate some of the anti-Columbus fervor. However, this seems to be a minority. Many appear to have been influenced from a young age to view Columbus as a “genocidal maniac” and even “worse than Hitler.”

The Europeans didn’t introduce slavery or racism to the New World; those were already present. The indigenous peoples were just as human and complex as those from the old world.

What Europeans did introduce was Christianity, which emphasized that all humans are made in the image of God—even if there were failures to fully realize that truth in practice.

According to Breitbart News, President Trump expressed in April that he aimed to “revive Columbus Day” after Democrats worked to diminish the legacy of explorers, and later signed a proclamation supporting both Leif Erikson Day and Columbus Day.
