White House rejects claims of exaggerated anger over Trump's video depicting the Obamas as gorillas

Backlash Over Trump’s Meme Video Dismissed by White House

The White House has brushed aside criticism surrounding a meme video shared by President Trump, which portrayed former President Obama and his wife Michelle in a derogatory manner. This response comes despite prominent Republican senators labeling the content “the most racist thing I’ve ever seen” and calling for its removal.

Caroline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the White House, stated on Friday, “This is from an Internet meme video that shows President Trump as the king of the jungle, with Democrats depicted as characters from ‘The Lion King.’” She urged the media to focus on issues that genuinely concern Americans rather than what she termed “false outrage.”

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina was quick to distance himself from the White House’s stance. He expressed his disapproval on social media, declaring, “I hope it’s fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen in this White House. The president should remove it.”

The brief video, posted on Trump’s Truth Social account, mainly addressed allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election, but it included an AI-generated image of the Obamas while the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” played in the backdrop. The video also referenced several key Democratic figures, portraying them as various jungle animals, sometimes to humorous effect, but also in a manner some found offensive.

The imagery depicted Joe Biden as a chimpanzee, Chuck Schumer as a zebra, and California Governor Gavin Newsom as an impala. Other figures also appeared, such as Illinois Governor JB Pritzker as an elephant and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as a meerkat.

Trump previously mentioned in an NBC News interview that he occasionally shares content he hasn’t verified, expressing regret over some unverified claims. As of now, there has been no response from representatives of the Obama family regarding the incident.
