California Issues CDL to Undocumented Immigrant Driver Charged in Fatal Crash

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt addressed reporters on Thursday, confirming that California has issued a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to an undocumented immigrant truck driver involved in a tragic, drunk-driving incident that resulted in three fatalities.

“We can verify that California licensed this person, and the Department of Transportation has already looked into the matter,” Levitt stated. “Secretary Duffy, who does commendable work, has discussed this issue extensively during the crackdown. The DOT is scrutinizing licenses that may have been improperly granted to those clearly unqualified for these positions.”

This individual entered the United States illegally in 2022 and was, according to Levitt, “released into our country by the previous administration.” She expressed concern over an “alarming pattern” of CDLs being issued to unauthorized immigrants, indicating that the DOT is intensifying efforts in this area.

Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old undocumented immigrant from India, faces charges for driving under the influence and causing a crash on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County that claimed three lives. Reports indicate he did not apply the brakes before colliding with slow-moving vehicles.

Authorities reported that Singh was first encountered by Border Patrol agents in March 2022 but was released while waiting for immigration proceedings. A toxicology test revealed that Singh was impaired at the time of the accident.

Two of the crash victims were identified as Clarence Nelson, an assistant basketball coach at Pomona High School, and his wife, highlighting the devastating personal losses caused by this incident.

This crash occurred only months after a similar incident involving an undocumented truck driver. Harijinder Singh was charged following a crash in Florida that killed three people when he allegedly made an illegal U-turn.

Harijinder Singh entered the United States unlawfully in 2018, obtaining a CDL in California despite having had a work permit application denied during the Trump administration.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy announced recently that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration withheld over $40 million from California after discovering the state wasn’t meeting English proficiency standards.

Following the release of video from the incident, Duffy remarked on the importance of adhering to safety standards for drivers, expressing that “we cannot allow our roads to be dangerous places!”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Department of Transportation and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office for further comments.
