Kyle Thiel’s Injury Updates: A Tough Break for the White Sox
Kyle Thiel, the catcher for Team Italy and a member of the Chicago White Sox, is facing a challenging situation after getting injured during Italy’s recent victory over the United States in the World Baseball Classic. Reports indicate he could be out for four to six weeks.
White Sox general manager Chris Getz informed reporters that Thiel sustained a Grade 2 tear in his right hamstring, which means it’s likely he may begin the 2026 season on injured reserve.
The injury occurred when Thiel, while batting, hit a ball down the first base line during Italy’s 8-6 win—a game that significantly affected the Americans’ chances to progress in the tournament. He seemed to experience discomfort while running toward second base.
This setback is disappointing for Thiel, who is just 24 and has been performing remarkably in the tournament. He even hit a home run in the second inning and tallied up a remarkable 4-for-6 in the games.
The organization was thrilled to have Thiel and infielder Sam Antonacci represent them, but Thiel’s injury has undoubtedly dimmed some of that enthusiasm.
Getz expressed pride in how the players have represented the White Sox, though the loss of Thiel stings.
White Sox manager Will Venable mentioned that he reached out to Thiel via text to check in on him and ensure he was in a good mental space.
“He’s a very positive person,” Venable shared. “He told me he was doing well and was optimistic about getting back as soon as he could.”
Last season, Thiel participated in 78 games for the White Sox, boasting a batting line of .273/.375/.411, with eight home runs and eleven doubles. Clearly, he had been a valuable asset to the team, making this injury all the more of a setback.
