Who is Doug Brightbill? ‘Gen V’ Actor Hamish Linklater Talks About Dean Cipher’s “Delicious” Plot Twist

5th Generation Season 2, Episode 7 Recap

The latest episode of 5th Generation, titled “A Week in Hell,” certainly shakes things up. It unveils some startling truths about Dean Cipher, played by Haimish Linklater. Surprisingly, Dean Cipher isn’t a real person; rather, Thomas Godolkin, portrayed by Ethan Slater, has been inhabiting another man’s body. This twist comes after Godolkin is gravely injured in that Elmira fire.

As the episode progresses, we witness Polarity gearing up for revenge against Dean Cipher for Andre’s death. But there’s a catch: Marie, played by Jaz Sinclair, is busy downstairs helping Godolkin regain strength, completely unaware of Polarity’s intentions. Essentially, Godolkin had moved past his previous accomplice, Doug Brightbill.

Linklater, directing the episode, described the transition from Dean Cipher to Doug as akin to “actor haute cuisine,” expressing his enthusiasm for the direction the plot has taken. He remarked, “It was delicious. Very, very delicious,” reflecting on the thrill of the storyline.

Poor Doug finds himself in a tough spot, pleading for his life. During the confrontation, he opens up about his struggles, sharing how he once lived with his cat Buster in his car after losing his job at Blockbuster.

“I don’t want to die, please. He’s out of my mind. I just want to live, because he’s finally out of my mind,” Doug desperately appeals to Polarity. This moment enlightens viewers about Dean Cipher’s troubling relationship with his supposed father figure; it becomes clear that Cipher’s abusive behavior stems from his deep-seated self-hatred.

Just as Cipher was about to wreak havoc on Godolkin’s body, Marie unknowingly unleashed a formidable force. It raises the question: is this truly the last we’ll see of Linklater as Doug? He appears to be one of the few who truly understands Godolkin, aside from Sister Sage.

Linklater expressed his eagerness to remain with the show, saying he is “thrilled” to be part of this season. He shared his excitement about working in a world he loves, remarking, “Being a huge fan of Season 1, I can’t believe I get to work with these actors. It’s like I’m so excited to be part of a program that talks to the public.”

The final episode of 5th Generation Season 2 is set to air on Wednesday, October 22nd.
