James Handy, Veteran Actor, Stabbed to Death

James Handy, an accomplished character actor known for his roles in more than 150 films and TV productions over a span of 50 years—including hits like “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick”—was tragically killed in Tarzana on Wednesday. He was 81.

While he may not have been a household name, Handy was a familiar face in Hollywood, recognized by countless movie and television audiences for his steady presence.

Born in New York City, Handy’s acting career took off in the late 1970s. He gradually built a substantial resume, appearing regularly in both major films and popular television series throughout the decades.

Yet, those who grew up in earlier decades likely remember him for his memorable supporting roles, such as the exterminator Carl Bentley in “Jumanji,” Milton Briggs in “Arachnophobia,” and the doctor in “Logan,” featuring Hugh Jackman.

Sadly, his life came to a violent end. Police reported that they received a 911 call from a man who declared, “I’m a son of man. I just killed a man who committed a crime.” Officers responded to a Tarzana residence around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, discovering Handy unconscious in the front yard, suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who allegedly cohabited with his mother, who had been in a relationship with Handy. Authorities noted that Gledhill approached them at the scene and identified himself as the perpetrator. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently booked into Van Nuys Jail, with bail set at $2 million. Detectives indicated that the incident appears to be isolated, posing no ongoing threat to the public.
