Who is Lisa Cook? The Fed governor involved in Trump's legal issues

Lisa Cook’s Historic Journey with the Federal Reserve

Lisa Cook’s journey as president of the Federal Reserve Board is nothing short of significant. Appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022, she made history as the first Black woman to take on this crucial role. The seven-member board plays a key part in setting the nation’s interest rates and monitoring the banking system.

Now, Cook finds herself at the heart of a rather unprecedented situation. Former President Donald Trump has attempted to remove her from the board, something the Federal Reserve has never experienced in its over 100-year history.

This whole conflict traces back to late August when Trump claimed Cook misrepresented facts regarding three mortgage loans she had taken out before her tenure at the Fed. Cook, however, has steadfastly denied any wrongdoing and hasn’t faced any criminal charges.

In response, she took legal action, filing a suit in federal court in Washington, D.C., to prevent her dismissal. Thankfully for her, a district court judge issued a temporary order on September 9, blocking Trump from firing her during the legal proceedings. This was later supported by a federal appeals court.

Cook is an accomplished economist, holding a degree from Spelman College and having been described as an “economist and historian.” She is multilingual, with proficiency in French, Russian, Spanish, and Wolof. Her professional background is impressive, featuring positions at renowned institutions like Harvard and Michigan State University. Notably, she also served as a senior economist on President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers from 2011 to 2012.

Though Cook was appointed to the Fed board in May 2022 and had her term renewed in September 2023, her future is now uncertain as the Supreme Court is set to deliberate on the matter soon. A decision from the court is anticipated by this summer.
