Cuomo Criticizes Democrats Over ICE Mask Policy
Chris Cuomo, host of News Nation, expressed frustration on Monday regarding the Democrats’ focus on a policy that would require ICE agents to remove their masks during enforcement operations. This comes at a time when attacks against these agents have reportedly increased.
New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and California Senator Alex Padilla have introduced a bill that aims to prevent ICE and other federal immigration agents from wearing face masks in most situations. Cuomo suggested that the priority should be on reshaping immigration policy instead of debating mask usage.
“Democrats are advocating for laws that make it compulsory for ICE agents to take off their masks while apprehending undocumented immigrants,” he said. “Why is this the main issue? Why aren’t they engaged in discussions about the Fourth Amendment or interpreting policy? They seem to be focusing on trivial matters.”
Cuomo elaborated, stating, “There’s a reason agents wear masks, and I think it’s important for their safety—especially given the nature of their work.”
He also referred to a recent press release from the Department of Homeland Security that mentioned a specific incident involving a Democratic representative who allegedly doxxed an ICE employee, leading to the agent being attacked.
“Rep. Carvajal exposed this ICE employee, and he was subsequently assaulted by rioters and ended up in the emergency room,” Cuomo noted.
“That’s serious. But instead of tackling real issues, the focus remains on masks,” he commented. “Democrats ought to be part of that discussion about what immigration policy should look like, rather than getting sidetracked by something like mask-wearing.”
In addition, the Department of Justice has made arrests related to a July 4 armed assault on a Texas ICE facility—an event that also involved shooting a local police officer. Law enforcement revealed that the gunman had previously fired upon Border Patrol agents at a Texas facility.
On Sunday, former ICE Director Tom Homan found himself in a heated exchange with Politico’s Dasha Burns, who questioned the necessity of masks for ICE agents during enforcement actions. Homan responded by emphasizing the unprecedented level of attacks they face, which he believes warrants additional protective measures.
