Whoopi Goldberg Criticizes Trump for Highlighting Men’s Hockey Team
On Wednesday, Whoopi Goldberg, a co-host on “The View,” expressed her discontent with President Donald Trump’s remarks about the Olympic men’s hockey team during his State of the Union address, calling it “really disrespectful.” She mentioned that many athletes have brought home gold medals, not just the hockey team.
During the address, President Trump singled out the U.S. men’s hockey team, celebrating their victory over Canada, which brought loud applause from the audience. He remarked on their success, saying, “What we have here tonight is a group of winners who have truly made an entire nation proud: the Olympic men’s hockey gold medal team.”
However, the co-hosts on “The View” were not amused by his comments. Joy Behar, sharing her feelings about the address, noted, “I watched every bit of it, and it made me feel sick and more nauseous than usual.” She, along with her fellow co-hosts, voiced their criticism of Trump’s remarks regarding immigration and the general tone of the speech. Behar emphasized that it’s not just Trump who is troubling, but also those who support him, suggesting that his behavior stems from a deeper issue.
Goldberg added to the discussion, pointing out that many gold medal winners come from various backgrounds, specifically mentioning the women’s hockey team and immigrant families contributing to the success of young athletes. Her remarks hinted at a broader inclusivity that she felt was overlooked in the president’s focus.
Another co-host, Sarah Haines, lightened the mood by joking that Trump might simply be a fan of hockey, a playful nod to a popular HBO Max series that portrays a romantic rivalry between hockey players.
Interestingly, while Goldberg criticized the focus on the men’s team, President Trump had indeed invited the women’s hockey team to the State of the Union, but they declined his invitation due to “post-Olympic academic and professional commitments.”
In a twist amid the controversy, rapper Flavor Fluff took it upon himself to invite the women’s team to a party in Las Vegas, showcasing a different kind of support for their achievements.
As this story unfolds, the White House has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the address and the ensuing backlash.
