The House passed a Republican-led bill on Thursday calling for evidence of citizenship for voter registration. Despite overwhelming disapproval of the Democratic Party's main law, four Democrats arrived across the aisle.
The Texas Republican Chip Roy's Save Act, like the narrow passage of the bill in the previous Congress, was passed almost entirely on a 220-208 vote along the party line.
As they did in 2024, Democrats voted for Roy's bill. He joined only a handful of flaws and Republicans.
This handful of Democrats supported the party in key votes, but they did so probably just for political survival.
“I voted for the Save Act simply because the American election is for the American people,” Golden I said in a statement on Thursday. “It's common sense to request evidence of citizenship to register for the vote.”
Golden, who previously fled the party with other important votes, further defended the Save Act, and even crashed some misconceptions about the bill.
“Some people argue that demanding evidence of citizenship is too troublesome, or that it 'disowns' people who have been renamed for reasons like marriage,” Golden said. “The truth is that a name change will ensure that no one will prevent them from registering for the ballot.”
“This bill allows for several different ways to prove citizenship,” Golden added. “But most importantly, protocols need to be established so that citizens can register even if there is a conflict in the document, such as name changes.”
In a statement shared with Blaze News, both Cuellar and Case reiterate Golden's position, claiming that the standards proposed by the Save Act ensure that the law is properly enforced.
“Non-citizen voting is illegal and we should all know that non-citizens are not voting,” Case said. “The SAVE Act provides consistent national standards for the documents needed to prove citizenship and voting rights.”
“This includes the various acceptable forms of identification that citizens eligible for most voters should have, and should be available to those who cannot,” Case added. “Because these standards are exaggerated, the fear of voter suppression should not hamper the requirements for a reasonable citizen ID, and voter suppression is illegal in any case.”
“Ultimately, this is about protecting the integrity of our elections and ensuring that all eligible Americans have a fair opportunity to vote. “That's how we maintain trust in our democracy, and it's worth standing up.”
In particular, all Democrats who voted for the Save Act, except in the lawsuit, live in the districts won by President Donald Trump in 2024. Trump won The Golden District of 53.8%, the Cuerar District of 53.1%, and the Perez district are just 50%.
These Democrats also won a small re-election in their respective purple districts in their final election cycle. Golden We won by only 50.3% of the vote. cuellar Winning at 52.8% Perez He stayed in her seat at 51.7%.
This handful of Democrats supported the party in key votes, but they did so probably just for political survival.
