Loved him or hated him, Donald Trump shook Tuesday night. He was sharp. He was interesting. He was under command. It was an old card – brushing his nectum-like attack. Still, this wasn't just the 45th president. This was an evolved man, a leader who took the first six weeks as the 47th president and turned them into a political whirlwind.
And it took a whirlwind, squeezing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, cracking down on illegal immigration, announcing massive deportation, rebuilding American industrial bases, securing hostages from Gaza and Russia, reviving Abraham's cooperation, registering bombs of the night, perhaps the biggest bombs of the night, stealing competition, imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, announcing massive deportation, and rebuilding mass industrial bases. Afghanistan. It was a showcase of merciless action.
We are deeply divided, but at some point we have to be bigger than the party.
Still, the Democrats were sitting motionlessly frozen. They don't applause. They wouldn't be standing. They barely blinked as Trump renamed a Texas wildlife shelter to her memory and honored the 12-year-old girl who was murdered by illegal immigrants. They recognized the courage of the young boy DJ Daniel, and stared vaguely at him as he fought a brain tumor and became an honorable secret service agent.
The Supreme Court justice rose up. The co-head was standing there. Even those who traditionally remained seated from protocols have broken their politeness to honor the child's fight. But Democrats? They sat on the stone face and remained motionless.
Unfortunately, the left-wing uprising against Trump didn't stop with the chilly stance of Congressional Democrats. Trump was late for his speech. The Secret Service had planned ahead – deployed the decoy and rerouteed the president in a different way. However, the event speaks to the playbook on the left.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) cried out the president, waving his cane in the air and ignoring his polite call, causing chaos in the halls of Congress with a full-fledged view. The weapons sergeant had to escort him for the first time in modern history. Compare it to Joe Wilson's famous “You lie!” Obama's moment. Wilson was quickly condemned, even by his own party. But Democrats have been silent about the green explosion – both the outcome and the apology, just keeping confusion in mind.
We are deeply divided, but at some point we have to be bigger than the party. Whether children are fighting cancer, reviving American hostages, or commitment to peace, there must be something that unites us. What remains if no common ground is found on top of it, based on courage, decency, and hope?
I actually feel embarrassed by the Democrats who sat in that room on a Tuesday night and can't even celebrate the most unified moments. Do you have to darken your world through it and feel nothing? How should you be cynical to dismiss everything as another Trump stunt?
But nonetheless, I continue to maintain hope. Six weeks later, Trump has done more than many presidents achieve in four years. He seeks peace in Ukraine. He brings hostages home. He reminds us what True Grit looks like through kids like DJs.
Make this a wake-up call with a friend across the aisle. If we can't even find the smallest moment of unity, we will never come back together. And if so, God helps us all.
