Why doesn’t Africa have a word for “maintenance”?

Could a basic concept like maintenance help explain some barriers to economic development? Franck Zanu of Zanu Project Rethink discussed that question with Nick Freitas, pointing to what he described as a lack of a word for “maintenance” in some African languages.

Zanu suggested that a region’s physical environment can shape how people solve problems and plan for the future. When a challenge keeps recurring, he argued, people are pushed to find ways to address it.

Freitas asked why some languages might have a word for repair but not maintenance. Zanu said the distinction could reflect differences in how people respond to their surroundings over time.

He described Africa’s tropical climate as relatively predictable, with less need to adapt to major seasonal changes in clothing or other parts of daily life. In his view, that predictability may have reduced pressure to develop habits of proactive, long-term planning and upkeep.
