Why Mets aren’t worried about Edwin Diaz’s shaky start

WEST SACREMENTO, CA – Edwindias' mini slump has yet to ring the alarm bell with Mets officials.

The Mets Closer went straight and shaky outing for the second time on Friday. He allowed two runs in nine innings before running away with saves, but pitching coach Jeremy Hefner is well pleased with the numbers underlying him to dismiss his concerns.

“Overall, the things and the spin rate and all of them are pretty normal,” Hefner said of Diaz before the Mets lost 3-1 to the A.

Diaz touched 99 mph on a four-seam fastball on Friday night and walked two left-handed batters to fuel the A's rally.

After starting the season with four straight scoreless appearances, he allowed five on Saturday to win, and was allowed on the previous two outings.

Wednesday's appearance against the Marlins was removed with two outs in nine innings after surrendering three runs.

Diaz said he struggled to grab the ball on a 44-degree day at Citifield.

“I'm completely dismissing that,” Hefner said.

If anything, Díaz, according to Hefner, may require slight mechanical adjustments.

“There may be some slight differences in his delivery. It's causing a few more mistakes. It looks like the two-ball count or three-ball count is getting worse than it actually is,” Hefner said. “We'll work on that.”
