Why Titans’ NFL draft comments weren’t what Patriots ‘wanted to hear’

The impact of the Patriots' win over the Bills in Week 18 may finally be felt, but it doesn't look too good for New England.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said people in Foxboro might not be happy to hear the Titans plan to land a “generational” talent at No. 1, but it's likely that they'll be buying two-way phenom Travis Hunter. He said it could be either Junior or Penn State star pass rusher Abdul Carter. He will be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The conventional wisdom is that New England doesn't need a quarterback, so the Patriots want Hunter or Carter to be the No. 4 pick.

“A defensive lineman from Penn State or a wide receiver/cornerback from Colorado State,” Schefter told WEEI of his expectations for Tennessee. “That quote told me they weren't set on getting a quarterback in the first round. That's not what New England wanted to hear today.”

The Patriots entered Week 18 with the No. 1 pick, but losing to a Bills team that had nothing to fight for was enough to secure the top pick.

New England won 23-16 and fell to the No. 4 pick, beating out the Titans (No. 1), Browns (No. 2), and Giants (No. 3).

The Patriots have their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye, who they took with the No. 3 overall pick last year, so the No. 1 pick was not important in that regard, but if that were the case, there would have been no one to stop them from acquiring Hunter or Carter. . , if they had wanted, they could have received valuable conscription funds to advance to the lower ranks.

There's still a chance that Carter or Hunter could fall to New England if two of the teams in front acquire a quarterback, but this year's group of signal callers isn't considered “generational.”

Colorado's Shedule Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward are considered the two best QB candidates, but both have questionable questions.

Experts agree that this year's QB numbers will be second only to last year's group that included Maye, Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Bo Nix, Michael Penix and JJ McCarthy. I am doing it.

Even a team like the Giants without a quarterback may decide to defend the position for another year, believing that Carter or Hunter are much better than quarterback.

ESPN's Mel Kiper ranks Hunter and Carter as the No. 1 and No. 2 prospects in their class, ahead of Sanders at No. 4 and Ward at No. 5.

Whoever New England takes will be the first pick under new coach Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker who returned to Foxborough after being fired as the Titans' coach last year.
