During Monday’s House Oversight Committee hearing on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) asked Kimberly Cheatle, President Joe Biden’s Secret Service chief, why the Secret Service’s security perimeter in Butler, Pennsylvania, is shorter than the range of an AR-15.
“An AR-15 has a range of about 400 to 600 yards,” Ocasio-Cortez said after being told by Rep. Cheatle that the building where Thomas Matthew Crooks allegedly shot President Trump was “about 200 yards” away from the stage.
“Why does the Secret Service have a shorter range of protection than one of America’s most popular semi-automatic rifles?” the congressman asked.

“There are a variety of weapons with a variety of ranges,” Cheatle replied, adding, “The advance has been completed, the demarcation of the border has been completed. I won’t go into details, but there are a number of factors that are taken into consideration when determining the border.”
“Some of it has to do with terrain, some has to do with buildings, some has to do with available assets and resources,” the Secret Service chief added.
In another part of his testimony, Cheatle told Rep. Ocasio-Cortez that there is “no standard” when it comes to determining a protective perimeter around an event.
“Every event and venue is different and is treated as such,” the Secret Service director said, reiterating that the building where Crooks shot Trump was “outside our security perimeter.”
As Breitbart News reported, Cheatle received a subpoena for failing to stop Crooks from firing a gun at Trump during a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.
On Tuesday, Cheatle resigned a day after a fiery congressional hearing in which he said he was unable or unwilling to answer many key questions posed by lawmakers about police failure to thwart the assassination attempt.
