Wife of fired Astros GM slams team for poor start

The wife of the former Astros GM has not made any secret of her opinion on the team’s performance this season.

On Thursday, the day after the Astros lost 5-3 to the Giants, Gina Luhnow, who is married to former Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow, offered a pointed response to an X fan’s question: “How did the Astros go from appearing in the ALCS seven straight years to being completely undefeated with just one off season?”

“The answer is simple: Jim Crane fired Jeff Luhnow. Karma sucks,” Gina responded on Thursday.

Two seasons removed from winning the World Series, Houston started the year with a disappointing 0-4 record and is currently 31-38, the fourth-worst record in the American League.

“Wow. I had no idea my comment would cause such a big stir.” Gina I wrote to X on Friday.“I want to be clear that I am in no way ‘congratulating’ the Astros for their current struggles. Jeff and I will always root for our boys and our team.”

Astros owner Jim Crane bought the team in 2011 and hired Jeff Luhnow as general manager, spearheading a rebuild of the organization.

Luhnow’s arrival has put the franchise on a path to success, winning its first World Series title in 2017 and appearing in the American League Championship Series for seven consecutive years, four of which have come under his management.

Crane fired Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch in 2020 following the Astros’ infamous sign-stealing scandal.

The former general manager filed a $22 million lawsuit against the team, claiming he had no knowledge of the illegal sign-stealing scheme and had 22,000 text messages to prove it.

Despite the scandal, Lunghou continues to enjoy success in the sports industry.

In 2021 he founded the Blue Claw Sports Group, overseeing football clubs in multiple leagues.

“I was already thinking about football,” Luhnow said. He told The Athletic In 2022. “I spent 16 years in baseball and it was a lot of fun. Football is where I belong now.”
