In a surprising move, Wikipedia temporarily halted edits on its pages after one of its co-founders, Larry Sanger, initiated efforts to promote more balanced perspectives on the platform.
Last month, Sanger established WikiProject Intellectual Diversity (WID), aiming to enhance the site’s commitment to neutrality and transparency.
Despite co-founding Wikipedia with Jimmy Wales in 2001, Sanger has now been indefinitely blocked from making any alterations—an unusual action for the platform to take against someone with his history.
Commenting on the situation, Sanger expressed his astonishment at the decision, noting it was made by a group of volunteer editors. He characterized the current Wikipedia community as resembling a “mob,” where the collective thought often overrules individual guidelines.
“People are constantly trying to read the room,” Sanger explained, suggesting that even strict policies feel flexible if there’s group consensus. His push for better representation of often-overlooked viewpoints, especially those of Hindus and American conservatives, hadn’t garnered favor among some of the site’s avid editors.
Wikipedia frequently emphasizes that its content is created by volunteers, citing impressive numbers—out of 267,000 contributors. Yet, Sanger argues that actual control rests with a small group of largely anonymous administrators, only 62 of whom he identifies as wielding significant influence.
For Sanger, the rapid decision to block him underscores a lack of fair processes. “There doesn’t seem to be due process,” he remarked, likening the platform’s mediation to being judged by an anonymous group devoid of structure.
After announcing his blocking via social media, Sanger was, indeed, reinstated shortly afterward.
A few editors raised concerns about the legitimacy of the block, suggesting that it was too hastily executed. This action was reportedly incited by a very active editor, TarnishedPath, known for significant interventions in Wikipedia’s content, particularly concerning sensitive topics like Zionism.
TarnishedPath has also prominently advocated for labeling JK Rowling as “anti-trans,” reflecting the heated nature of many discussions on the platform. In one instance, a claim about Rowling’s views was categorized as non-neutral. Simultaneously, other editor comments devalued those questioning the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite past actions to restrict TarnishedPath’s contributions, anonymous editors played a key role in Sanger’s situation, illustrating the kind of internal politics that he believes hinders open discourse.
Wikipedia has faced scrutiny regarding perceived left-wing biases, pointing out cases where figures like Donald Trump have been controversially branded.
Interestingly, the site follows a narrow list of reliable sources, often rating mainstream outlets as trustworthy while conservative ones receive far harsher evaluations.
The justification for Sanger’s block cited his calls to action as “canvassing,” implying he was trying to sway opinions inappropriately. Yet, one could argue that the policy also allows for the dissemination of information aimed at fostering broader discussions.
Sanger recently returned to participate after a long break, claiming that the platform has adopted a viewpoint he considers fundamentally flawed. Ironically, he published a paper advocating against indefinite blocking—a practice he labeled “draconian.”
Just last November, Sanger weigh in on the Gaza topic, prompting reactions from Wales, who publicly defended Sanger but seemed doubtful about the outcome.
Sanger, feeling resigned to his fate, commented, “It’s great that Jimmy supported me, but I suspect that ultimately, I’ll remain banned.” He had left Wikipedia in 2002, and over the years, Wales has downplayed Sanger’s co-founding role, which has led to some awkward moments in interviews.
