Will Smith’s Harrowing Arctic Dive Experience

Will Smith, the 57-year-old actor, recently recounted a near-death experience he faced while filming his new project, *Pole to Pole*. Initially, he thought he was embarking on an exciting adventure but quickly discovered the situation was far more perilous than he anticipated.

During a segment on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*, Smith described how he found himself trapped beneath solid ice at the North Pole. As the cameras rolled, he was dependent on a single tether for his safety.

Smith explained, “We went scuba diving in the North Pole, right? So we went under the ice. The ice can be up to 10 feet thick. We emerged about 40 yards away… It looked like an upside-down mountain range of ice.” However, trouble soon followed as he heard an emergency warning from above—“Abort the dive! Abort the dive! Abort!”

At that moment, panic set in. Smith recounted, “I thought, ‘Oh no, I’m done,’ and then I hit the ice. I had to remind myself to calm down. You have to pull yourself back into the hole… I accidentally took my mask off.” This mistake left him exposed underwater, one of the most dangerous situations for any diver.

Despite the terrifying ordeal, Smith managed to put his mask back on and suppress his panic. He humorously noted that as reality sunk in, he began to joke with himself to stay focused. “I thought, when I get out of here, I’m only going to do black stuff,” he joked, acknowledging the gravity of the experience while adding humor. “Lord, I promise! From now on, I will act like an African American!”

Eventually, help arrived. Smith felt someone grab his rope and pull him to safety. Once he realized he was okay, he relaxed, noting that sunlight filtering through the ice transformed the moment from fear to something deeply spiritual and beautiful. “It went from fear to the most spiritual and beautiful thing,” he reflected, emphasizing the importance of keeping hold of his tether.

Hosted by National Geographic, *Pole to Pole with Will Smith* showcases the actor’s extensive travels across all seven continents. Over the course of 100 days, he faces extreme challenges, from skiing in the South Pole to diving under the ice in the North Pole. This ambitious project is inspired by the late mentor’s adventurous spirit.
