Will the Lakers be strong contenders for the NBA championship with Luka Doncic and LeBron James?

The Lakers: Contenders or Impostors?

The Los Angeles Lakers, featuring stars like Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves, seem poised as contenders for the NBA title. Yet, a closer look at their season statistics paints a different picture—one of uncertainty.

Currently, the Lakers hold a 33-21 record, placing them fifth in the Western Conference and just 1.5 games behind the Denver Nuggets. This is particularly noteworthy considering Doncic, James, and Reaves have collectively missed 56 games. However, despite their advantageous position, their net rating stands at an even mark, suggesting they might be overperforming rather than being a dominant force.

With the trade deadline and the All-Star Weekend approaching, the Lakers are now focused on the upcoming regular season games, totaling 28 before the playoffs begin.

1. Elite Offensive Expectations

Last season, with the star trio leading the way, the Lakers were anticipated to develop into a top-tier offensive unit. However, that hasn’t fully materialized this year. Coming out of the All-Star break, they ranked 11th in offensive rating at 116.3—a decent but not exceptional figure, especially given their defensive vulnerabilities.

Contending teams typically excel in at least one phase of the game, yet I think the Lakers struggle to find that elite edge. Doncic, James, and Reaves possess incredible offensive skills, but they’re not consistently showcasing it together on the court. Interestingly, their offensive rating when all three play has been notably low at 107.9.

For perspective, the Nuggets boast an offensive rating of 127.5 when their key players share the floor, and the Thunder’s core does even better. It’s concerning that Doncic, James, and Reaves have only played together for a mere 152 minutes this season due to injury burdens.

Last year did see the Lakers performing better offensively when their trio was healthy, but they’ve had significant gaps in their lineup to address. This season’s challenges may just require some adjustments—and perhaps a bit of luck with injuries—to get the offense back on track.

2. Zone Defense Adaptations

The Lakers’ struggles on defense were somewhat anticipated, primarily because of their roster dynamics. Yet, their performance has been worse than expected, with a defensive rating that ranked them 26th as of mid-January. Things shifted after integrating more zone defense in their strategy, which led to improved stability.

Since adopting this approach, their defensive rating has improved to 112.7, now ranking 13th in the league. They’ve relied heavily on this defensive setup, which has proved effective against opponents.

3. The Key Role of Deandre Ayton

The impact of Deandre Ayton on the Lakers’ potential is critical. The team has a 15-2 record when he attempts ten or more shots, but it drops significantly when he makes fewer. Additionally, his rebounding numbers correlate strongly with their success—22-7 when he grabs at least eight boards but only 6-11 otherwise.

In conclusion, Ayton’s presence on the court can significantly alter the trajectory of the Lakers this season. As they navigate the final stretch before the playoffs, these factors will play a pivotal role in determining whether they are true contenders or just holding on by a thread.
