Will Trump reveal running mate from convention podium Monday night reality TV style?

MILWAUKEE — Eight years ago, Donald Trump named his vice presidential nominee three days before the Republican National Convention began in Cleveland.

“I am pleased to announce that I have selected Governor Mike Pence as my running mate. I will hold a press conference tomorrow at 11am,” Trump wrote in a July 15, 2016 tweet.

Eight years later, and two days until the 2024 Republican Convention kicks off in the battleground state of Wisconsin’s largest city, the former president and potential future president has yet to make any announcement.

With President Biden Trump is in no rush to seek political attention despite growing calls from Democrats to end his reelection campaign amid growing concerns about whether he can hang on to another four years in the White House after his unfavorable performance in last month’s debate.

However, in recent days, the former president has indicated his desire to announce his running mate at the party convention.

“I would love to do it during the convention,” Trump said on Fox News’ “Hannity” earlier this week.

Two days later, heThe Brian Kilmeade Show on Fox Radio “In the past, we used to do this during tournaments and it really livened up the tournament, so we’ll look into that.”

During an appearance on “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show” on Thursday, the former president reiterated his desire to announce his running mate during the convention, which he likened to the NBC reality show that once gave the real estate and business mogul a national identity.

“If you think about it, this is like a highly sophisticated version of ‘The Apprentice,'” Trump said.

“There is an opportunity to do that,” a Trump campaign official told Fox News on condition of anonymity.

“We will be ready for when President Trump announces his choice,” the official said.

The announcement at the convention would mark a dramatic culmination of a process that has attracted increasing attention in recent weeks.

But time is running out for Trump.

The convention begins on Monday, and Trump needs to announce the name of his running mate before a roll call to formally nominate him. Party officials have not yet said when the roll call will take place, but it should take place by Wednesday evening, when the vice presidential nominee will address the delegates from the podium.

As for who he might choose, Trump has suggested Sens. J.D. Vance of Ohio, Marco Rubio of Florida and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum are on his shortlist, and the former president has also praised Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.

“I think I have my mind pretty firmly set,” Trump told Fox News’ Kilmeade this week.

Senior advisers maintain that only Trump knows the identity of his running mate.

“Just for the record, I don’t know who that is!” Trump campaign co-chairman Chris LaCivita said in a social media post, referring to intense speculation surrounding the former president’s running mate.

Brian Hughes, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, reiterated his claim to Fox News that “anyone who claims to know who President Trump will choose as his vice president or when he will choose him is lying, unless that person is Donald J. Trump.”

Once the announcement is made, the Trump campaign will be ready to immediately begin printing signs, shirts, hats and other merchandise featuring the Republican 2024 presidential ticket, the people confirmed.

“Whenever that decision is made, we will be ready,” another Trump campaign adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Fox News.
