Winter mix expected for morning commute in NYC area, but conditions may worsen by evening

Severe Weather Expected from Nor’easter

A nor’easter is set to hit the metropolitan area Tuesday morning, bringing winter-like rain that could make commutes challenging. However, meteorologists suggest the worst conditions may arise during the evening rush hour.

From New York to Pennsylvania and Maine, road conditions are expected to be tough due to a blast of cold air. Drivers should exercise caution, particularly during the late commute, forecasters warned.

According to FOX Weather meteorologist Cody Braud, it might start getting wet towards the end of the morning rush. “Most early morning commuters will encounter some rain or light rain, but significant impacts won’t appear until around 9 a.m.,” he noted.

As for the evening commute? Well, that could be even trickier. “Moderate to heavy rain is expected during that time,” Brad explained, adding that travel could be slow and airport delays may occur.

Rain is anticipated to persist in New York City and along I-95 throughout the day, with temperatures hovering in the mid-30s to low 40s overnight. But for those living north of Interstate 95, they’ll likely see their first substantial snowfall of the winter.

In Westchester County, accumulations could exceed 2 inches, while Northern New Jersey, especially near the western edge of Passaic County, might see around 1 inch. Snow will begin to pile up further inland and in the northern areas of the state.

Places like Albany could receive more than 8 inches, with the lower Hudson Valley looking at about 3 inches. Further north, parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine might experience over 8 inches of snowfall.

The New York State Department of Transportation has warned that some areas could see snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour, urging motorists to plan their trips accordingly. Interestingly, despite the severity of the storm, FOX Weather doesn’t anticipate dangerous ice conditions on the roads. The nor’easter is expected to be out of the area by Wednesday morning.
