Winter Severe Storm Causes Power Outages and Affects More Than 11,000 Flights

Severe Winter Superstorm Hits the US

In the last few days, a significant winter superstorm has swept across much of the United States, affecting over 800,000 residents with power outages and grounding more than 11,000 flights. This snowstorm stands out as one of the most intense in decades, not just because of the bitter cold but also due to the scale and seriousness of the situation.

Regions heavily impacted include the Midwest, Northeast, and South, where conditions have unleashed snow, ice, freezing rain, sleet, and strong winds. The storm is notable, especially when compared to previous winter storms; it currently affects more than 200 million Americans. Over 20 governors have declared states of emergency, some leading to Level 3 road closures and highways that resemble ice skating rinks.

As of Monday morning, January 26, 2026, the storm has triggered extensive power outages and serious disruptions in transportation. Emergency response systems have been alerted due to numerous injuries and fatalities, with reports indicating that at least 13 lives have been lost due to the storm’s ferocity.

“Just because the precipitation has stopped doesn’t mean the danger is over,” noted Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center. “Several areas are still dealing with thick ice, freezing rain, sleet, and snow, and temperatures will likely remain below freezing through the week’s workdays.”

He’s got a point. Even though the sleet and snow might have paused for now, recovery from the more than foot of snow dumped across 20 states could take at least a week. Currently, over 85 million people are under cold wave warnings, with forecasts indicating bitter temperatures—not accounting for wind chill. The financial impact on the country is predicted to be around $100 billion, and it will take considerable time to mend power lines and restore safety measures.
