The Wisconsin State’s Attorney has suspended the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program following a lawsuit that claims it is unconstitutional.
In December 2023, the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) filed a lawsuit against the state bar association, alleging that its Diversity Clerkship Program was illegal and racially discriminatory.
“Defeating unconstitutional DEI programs has become a specialty of WILL, and we are not stopping here,” said Skylar Croy, an associate attorney at WILL. In a statement.

A settlement was reached Thursday between the Wisconsin State Bar and WILL to end “discriminatory DEI practices at the State Bar.”
Now, mandatory state bar dues will no longer fund internships and policies that prioritize candidates’ campaigns, but instead fund merit and diversity of perspectives.

The State Bar will offer the program to all first-year law students attending Marquette University School of Law or the University of Wisconsin School of Law, regardless of race.
