Severe Flash Flooding Hits Wisconsin
Over the weekend, particularly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin faced severe flash flooding that triggered reports of inundated roads and homes, leading authorities to close the Wisconsin State Fair.
A series of heavy rainstorms resulted in an incredible 5.74 inches of rainfall recorded on Saturday evening alone. By Sunday morning, that figure surged to approximately 6.69 inches.
“This is an unprecedented flood for the Milwaukee area,” said a weather expert, noting that some communities had radar estimates exceeding 10 inches of rain within a short timeframe. It’s quite alarming, really.
State Fair officials announced the closure on Facebook, urging visitors to be cautious and find the nearest safe exits.
As conditions worsened, the scheduled Lynyrd Skynyrd concert was canceled to prioritize the safety of performers and attendees. “We did our best to make it work, but safety comes first,” authorities stated.
Meanwhile, officials continued to advise residents to stay updated on forecasts and be prepared to react swiftly to ensure their safety.
In light of the emergency, Mayor Peter Brugelis noted a surge in 911 calls related to the flooding. He asked those calling for help to remain on the line, as operators were working through a backlog of requests.
On the ground, many streets were closed due to rapidly flowing water, creating perilous conditions for drivers. One resident shared their frustrating experience of a normally short commute taking nearly two hours due to road closures.
Elsewhere over the weekend, severe weather impacted the central plains, resulting in at least one fatality in Nebraska. Emergency crews responded to tragic incidents in Two Rivers State Parks, where a large tree fell onto a vehicle, resulting in a fatality and one serious injury.
Rescue teams struggled to extract the injured individual due to the weight of the tree, but efforts lasted about 90 minutes before they were successful. The man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities expressed sorrow over the loss of life and conveyed gratitude for the coordinated rescue efforts involving multiple agencies.
