Thousands of Displaced Palestinians Return to Northern Gaza

On Friday, a significant number of Palestinians who had been displaced began their return journey to northern Gaza following the activation of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Images captured by Gaza-based freelance photojournalist Fadel Mugari showcased the moments right after the ceasefire announcement near the Mediterranean in the Netzarim area.

The Netzarim Corridor, approximately four miles long, connects northern Gaza with the rest of the Gaza Strip. Established by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 2023, it was utilized for military operations during the conflict.

The IDF reported via social media that the ceasefire commenced at noon, stating, “Since that time, IDF forces have started positioning themselves along the updated lines in anticipation of the ceasefire and the return of hostages.” They added that the troops would also continue to address any immediate threats.

In the meantime, thousands of displaced individuals were seen making their way back to Gaza, a poignant return that many likely felt deeply amidst the ongoing complexities of the situation.

This ceasefire follows President Trump’s announcement of a 20-point peace initiative, which aims to conclude a two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. This war was triggered by an attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people and leaving about 250 hostages.

Health officials in Gaza have reported that at least half of the casualties from the fighting were women and children, emphasizing the cost of the conflict.

The “first phase” of the ceasefire agreement includes not just the return of hostages but also an Israeli troop withdrawal from certain areas. President Trump is slated to visit the Middle East this weekend, and he indicated that U.S. troops would be deployed to Israel to help monitor the progress of this agreement.
