Withholding Money from Harvard over Antisemitism Is ‘Authoritarianism’

On Tuesday's “CNN News Central,” Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) responded to the Trump administration's threat of pulling $9 billion in federal funding from Harvard, saying “authoritarianism is not the answer to anti-Semitism.”

John Berman asked: “Of course, Harvard Senators are at the heart of the Massachusetts and Massachusetts constitutions. The president and the White House are threatening to withhold $9 billion in funds. Anti-Semitism?”

Markey said, “Look, anti-Semitism is wrong. Anti-Semitism has to be fought. Anti-Semitism is unacceptable in our country. But authoritarianism is not the answer to anti-Semitism. Harvard University has hundreds of scientists. We find cures for these diseases in our country and around the world, and portray them in an authoritarian way. And what we're seeing now is Roy Cohn, once again hinting at ourselves in the brains of our very powerful human beings in our country.
