The second amendment guarantees the citizens' right to bear arms. Many conservatives argue that this is It's the most important right. why? Our other core rights – freedom of religion, speech, assembly – are worthless if they cannot be defended. Firearms protect your freedom.
But these same conservatives have I was attacked by a vicious President Trump's recent 25% tariff He describes the imports of steel and aluminum as “they are seeking the most brave political rent.” Some self-styled nonpartisan critics have said Trump's tariffs are “Unconstitutional power grab. ”
America doesn't even make what it needs to be used to make more.
These criticisms are not only unfounded. It is also completely rearward. why? The trade deficit is the greatest threat to American freedom. America needs Tariffs to eliminate trade deficits and protect national security.
A lovely bunch of coconuts
Trade deficits undermine American national security for what is called Import dependencies. Import dependencies occur when a country cannot maintain itself without import. This often happens when a country lacks certain natural resources.
For example, Iceland is too cold to grow coconuts, so you need to buy coconuts from a tropical island. In this way, Iceland is import dependent on coconuts. Import dependencies may not be important – coconuts are not important to Iceland's economy – but what if coconuts were replaced with oil? I can imagine the winter in Iceland is far less kind without fuel.
What's less obvious is the threat posed by relying on imported manufactured goods such as silicon chips. How can Iceland maintain a modern economy without access to computers? That could not be done. Worse, it is clear that those who controlled the supply of computers to Iceland will exercise great political leverage on the people of Iceland.
In reality, countries that rely on imports are so vulnerable. One of the best historical examples of the risk of import dependence occurred during the American Revolution. This may be a surprise, but the American Revolution almost failed to resist the British because the colony failed to produce enough cannons, firearms and gunpowder.
The tide changed as British European rivals, especially the French and Dutch, began supplying the Continental Army. For example, France alone provided over 80,000 firearms in addition to swords, knives and uniforms in France alone. The United States relied on British manufactured goods, but this economic dependence broke that allowed America to free itself from the Imperial York.
President George Washington acknowledged this fact and wrote that America would not be able to protect its freedom unless the United States is “independent from others, especially for military supplies.” To this end, his first major law was the Customs Act of 1789, which raised taxes on imported manufactured goods.
One of the important objectives of the law was to promote the development of American manufacturing. Even Thomas Jefferson, who initially supported free trade on principles, ultimately agreed to Washington. In the wake of the war in 1812, Jefferson wrote:
Experience has taught us that manufacturers are as necessary to our independence as our comfort. And if someone quoting me in another opinion continues walking to me when buying foreigners who can't get the equivalent of domestic fabric, then the price difference [we would be well off] …
Both Washington and Jefferson realized that economics and politics are just two aspects of the same coin. Therefore, in order to protect America's political independence, the first thing to do is maintain America's economic independence.
My Kingdom for Horse (Made in China)
American colonies relied on European imports to deprive us of our freedom from the British. Today we rely on Chinese imports.
Consider that America doesn't produce enough basic types of machines needed to make simple household items. Don't worry about the sophisticated electrical components that your computer or smartphone needs. In other words, even if you want to manufacture a fork, you probably need to buy a fork-making machine from China.
This is revealed when looking at American production Machine tools. A machine tool is a machine that shapes the output by foaming, planning, drilling, grinding, grinding, sawing, or pressing the output to form the output. Machine tools convert raw materials into useful ones. They are tools to create tools.
The United States was once a leading manufacturer of machine tools and a global exporter. Today, America imports most machine tools, producing only 7% of the world's machine tools. For comparison, Italy produces 8% and China earns 29%.
The United States imports more than $500 billion in advanced technology products from China each year. Our industrial bases have been hollowed out until they can no longer maintain their economy without imported machine tools or semiconductors. Don't worry about all harmless items you import like cutlery or baseball caps.
The United States relies on China to imports. This will suppress America's ability to act independently on the world stage and utilize America in its military future involvement with China.
What happens if a conflict breaks out between the US and China? Perhaps the US will need to expand industrial production to build more weapons, vehicles and computers. One problem: Scaling up is not possible. At least not soon.
To manufacture more equipment, the US needs to build more factories. However, the United States imports almost all industrial parts and machine tools. So America doesn't even make what it needs to be used to make more.
Worse, the American workforce does not have the training and experience to manufacture important products. For example, what happens if China stops selling microchips? We wouldn't do that, even if we assume that America has the tools to manufacture microchips, but we don't have the human capital to manufacture large-scale microchips. Few Americans know how to make microchips. Furthermore, few Americans have the skills to build the factory itself.
If the US is serious about national security, it will reduce the trade deficit and restore industry self-sufficiency to its top priority.
