U.S. Officials Visit USS Abraham Lincoln Amid Tensions with Iran
On a scheduled deployment, U.S. Peace Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and U.S. Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper visited the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea on Saturday.
This visit comes at a time of heightened tensions with Iran. Witkoff mentioned that military personnel “are protecting our security and embodying President Trump’s message of peace through force.” Interestingly, this meeting occurred just one day after the U.S. and Iran engaged in discussions in Oman regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
During the visit, Witkoff expressed gratitude to the sailors and marines, observed flight operations, and spoke with the pilot responsible for intercepting an Iranian drone that approached the carrier without clear intentions. “I’m proud to work alongside these dedicated individuals who safeguard our nation’s interests and exemplify American preparedness,” he shared on X.
The USS Abraham Lincoln departed from San Diego in November, initially heading towards the Indo-Pacific region before making its way to the Middle East by January.
Admiral Cooper praised the commitment of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, stating their professionalism is showcased through their readiness and strength in the region.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced a meeting with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to further discuss concerns about Iran.
Netanyahu’s office noted that the Prime Minister believes negotiations should involve limiting ballistic missiles and ceasing support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. The last encounter between Netanyahu and Trump was back in September.
Reflecting on the recent discussions in Oman, President Trump remarked it was “very good,” indicating optimism about Iran’s willingness to negotiate, though much depends on the specifics of any potential deal.
