Steve Witkov, a special envoy group in the Trump administration, highlighted recent negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine, but noted that President Trump is the “ultimate decision maker” in the process.
Witkov joined CBS News' Face the Nation on Sunday, asking host Margaret Brennan about the 30-day ceasefire agreed by the US and Ukraine, but Russia did not.
“Well, President Trump is our decision maker, the ultimate decision maker,” he said. “And then, Russian country President Putin is their decision maker.”
“I think it's a very positive sign that the two are talking about one day,” Witkov added.
Witkov's meeting took place a few weeks after an attempt from the US to end the war.
US officials met with Russian affiliates early on, raising concerns in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky met with Trump and reached a mineral trade that pushed negotiations forward. The meeting ended with a cry, and Trump stopped aiding to Ukraine.
Zelensky is aiming to repair the relationship, and the ceasefire agreement was agreed by both US and Ukrainian officials.
Witkov met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Vladimir Putin has not confirmed whether he agrees to the deal. Some have questioned whether he is delaying the end of the war.
Witkov said his meetings were on track and there was a tendency to end the war from both Russia and Ukraine.
“They all tend to be very good and hopefully inform us of the possibility of a short-term peace agreement,” Witkoff said.
