President Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkov, said Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelensky apologized to Trump after explosive public debate during an oval office meeting.
“Zelensky wrote to the President, who apologised for the entire incident that took place in the oval office,” Witkov said. I said it on Monday Fox News. “It was an important step and I think there was a lot of debate between our team and the Ukrainians and the Europeans associated with this debate.”
US and Ukrainian officials will meet in Saudi Arabia this week to regain peace talks to end the war with Russia.
Witkov said he thought Zelensky would send Trump a letter apologizing for the fiery meeting being “progress.”
In Trump's joint speech to Congress, he shared that the country received a letter from Zelensky in an effort to smooth out the bonds. Trump said he thanked the letter that came days after the US stopped military aid to Ukraine.
Shortly after the fiery meeting between Zelensky and Trump, Ukrainian leaders called it a “remorse” gathering, but stopped issuing apologies.
However, Zelensky had indicated that Ukraine was still ready to come to the negotiation table after a meeting where the US and Ukraine were scheduled to reach an agreement on the mineral trade.
Witkov said it is important for authorities to discuss Ukrainians, territorial issues and security protocols for utility plans.
“These are not complicated. They just need to… be on the table and everyone needs to be transparent about what their expectations are, and we can start to discuss how to compromise,” he said.
