WNBA delays Liberty-Wings game because of plane mechanical problems

No plane, train, or automobile could get the New York Liberty to Texas on time. The Liberty were set to play the Dallas Wings on Thursday at 9 PM ET; however, the game was postponed. The WNBA cited mechanical issues on a Liberty Airlines charter flight for the delays.

Now, the game has been rescheduled for Monday, July 20, 2025, at 8:00 PM ET, with the WNBA stating that the Wings will honor all tickets bought for the original date.

Liberty player Pauline Astier shared her frustrations on her Instagram Story Wednesday night, mentioning, “10 hours later, still on the tarmac.” According to reports, after switching planes, they finally disembarked around 12:30 AM ET.

New York City faced thunderstorms throughout Wednesday afternoon, which contributed to the delays. Consequently, the Liberty had to cancel their scheduled matchup.

Currently, the Liberty hold the 4th position in the Eastern Conference with 13 wins and 11 losses, but they have struggled recently, losing seven of their past 10 games, including three in a row.

Due to the travel hiccups, the Liberty will play three games in just five days across three different cities: the Indiana Fever on the road Saturday, the Wings on the road Monday, and the Chicago Sky at home Wednesday.

On the other hand, the Wings have been performing well this season, sitting at 16-8 and riding a five-game winning streak. After facing the Liberty, they’ll head to Portland to take on the Fire on Wednesday.
