Angel Reese Discusses Media Interactions and Controversy
WNBA player Angel Reese recently shared her apprehensions regarding media interactions, stating she would prefer to incur fines than face reporters. The Chicago Sky player, known for her rivalry with Caitlin Clark, expressed her feelings during the latest episode of her podcast, “an angel without fear.”
Reese mentioned, “Even before a game, I’m worried about what questions might come up. Sometimes they might seem good, but they get twisted. It’s like, are we here to confuse or to ask genuine questions? For me, dealing with the media isn’t easy, and I’d honestly rather pay a fine than do interviews.” She added that sometimes, it’s just safer to say nothing because the media can present stories in unexpected ways.
Since her LSU Tigers defeated Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship, Reese has drawn significant media attention. She has become a somewhat polarizing figure in women’s basketball, with many of her statements sparking debate within the sports community.
As the 2025 WNBA season approaches, Reese faced criticism for comments she made regarding her team’s disappointing performance. She stated, “I’m not happy with how this year went. We need to bring in strong players. That’s just what I feel is necessary.” She emphasized that attracting top talent is crucial for improvement and that she intends to be vocal about her aspirations for the team.
However, she later clarified that her words were misunderstood. In a postgame interview, she expressed her regret for how her comments were interpreted on the Chicago Tribune. “I want to apologize to my teammates because they’ve worked hard alongside me all year,” she said. “It wasn’t my intention to sound harsh, and I need to be clearer with my words.” Unfortunately, this led to her being suspended for the first half of a subsequent game due to comments deemed harmful to the team.
Earlier in May, Reese was involved in a WNBA investigation regarding “hateful” remarks directed toward her during a game. When asked about the investigation, she refrained from sharing specifics but acknowledged that she had received a great deal of support from fellow players and the organization during the situation. “There’s no place for such behavior in this league,” she noted, reflecting on the broader implications of the incident.
Reese has also alleged that some fans of Clark engaged in racist behavior, including creating explicit AI-generated images of her. “It’s frustrating, and at times, it feels disrespectful. I think racism can really rear its head in situations like this,” she explained in her podcast. She recounted moments when her family received inappropriate images related to her online presence, which understandably caused concern.
