Brianna Stewart Advocates for Abolishing ICE
Brianna Stewart, a professional basketball player, has voiced her intention to communicate a clear message regarding the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Stewart, currently playing for the New York Liberty in the WNBA, expressed her political views during a game in a different women’s basketball league on Sunday afternoon.
“I know everyone here feels that way in some way.”
While being introduced at the Unrivaled Basketball League game in Medley, Florida, she held a sign saying “Abolish ICE.” Stewart is one of the league’s co-founders.
Following the game, she spoke with reporters about her overwhelming reactions to social media and news over the weekend. “Honestly, I was feeling frustrated by what I saw on Instagram and in the news all day yesterday,” Stewart shared in an interview. “We’re currently driven by so much hate, not love. It was important to deliver a straightforward message: ‘Abolish ICE.’ This means… creating policies that support families and communities instead of instilling fear and violence.”
“I think that’s crucial when human lives are involved,” she added, highlighting her concerns over ICE and the unrest in Minnesota.
Stewart emphasized that it was vital for her to express this simple message before the game, noting that she believes many others share her sentiments.
Additionally, her advocacy regarding immigration policies stems from her personal experiences. Stewart mentioned she’s in the process of securing U.S. citizenship for her wife, Marta Zargay, who holds legal permanent residency. “Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to matter,” she remarked. “I believe reforms are necessary because current policies aren’t affecting those who need it the most. They, frankly, don’t help anyone.”
