WNBA player Natasha Cloud expressed her excitement on Thursday regarding the recent win of Democratic Socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani for New York City mayor.
When a reporter brought up the name in a seemingly out-of-context manner, Cloud responded, “It’s my boy!”
The New York Liberty athlete launched into a not-so-well-informed discussion about socialism, suggesting that Donald Trump and Ice might provoke backlash from New Yorkers.
Cloud began by making strong comments about the safety of Trump and federal immigration officers.
“I told him to investigate,” she said confidently. “If Donnie wants to step out, that’s fine. If Ice wants to step out, that’s fine. But they’ll learn the hard way. I’ve been in New York for two months, and trust me, New Yorkers are serious.”
She continued, “It’s reckless for our president. I think it’s reckless for this administration, but it’s also kind of thrilling for us.”
“It’s when you know we’re making an impact. We’re changing things they don’t want changed. And for all of us in New York, we must stay on this historic path.”
Cloud urged New Yorkers not to fear the new mayor.
“Because he’s a Muslim, a socialist, a Democrat, he’ll face major pushback,” she explained. “They’ll spread Islamophobic nonsense to intimidate him, claiming socialism is detrimental to our progress.”
Cloud proceeded to present a rather simplistic view of socialism.
“Socialism means equality; everyone deserves the same dignity and opportunities. He plans to do this by taxing the wealthy and not putting the burden on the poor. [she gestured widely], Do you understand? Don’t close your eyes to what’s happening! But here in New York, we need to ensure our safety.”
“He believes it’s the government’s responsibility to take care of all its members, making sure everyone lives with dignity, no matter who they are.”
