Caitlin Clark Returns Strong After Injury Scare

Caitlin Clark faced her first setback of the season after a tough defeat during the Indiana Fever’s game against the Portland Fire on Wednesday. Despite Indiana ultimately winning 90-73, her absence immediately sparked worries about her ability to play in the upcoming match against the Golden State Valkyries. Fortunately, those concerns quickly faded when Clark took her place back in the starting lineup, scoring a remarkable 22 points and helping sustain Indiana University’s three-game winning streak.

Clark shared that recovering from injury wasn’t merely a physical hurdle; it took a significant mental toll, too. “I think at the end of the day, it’s all about me and my confidence,” she expressed to reporters on Friday. “Coming back from any sort of injury, regardless of its nature, definitely presents a real mental challenge.”

This year, Clark’s promising run in the WNBA was somewhat derailed by injuries. After an impressive rookie year where she played 40 games and claimed Rookie of the Year honors in 2024, she found herself sidelined last season due to a groin strain and a bruised ankle bone, managing to play just 13 games.

Reflecting on her confidence levels, Clark mentioned, “Sometimes it can feel a bit shaky, especially as we move through the season. These are the best players in the world. If I’m not fully confident in my body going into a critical game this year, it makes you question if it’s worth it.” In the game against Golden State, she logged 32 minutes and added nine assists, nearly achieving a double-double.

Clark also noted the heightened physical demands of the current season compared to the off-season matches. “Yes, I played basketball in America this offseason,” she recalled, “but I wasn’t playing 32 minutes. It was really physical.” She emphasized the importance of understanding her body post-game, as sometimes the adrenaline can mask the true physical feelings. “Overall, I’m feeling good. Just gotta keep taking care of myself.”

Looking ahead, the Fever and Valkyries are set to meet again in San Francisco on Thursday. As Clark works through the mental aspects of recovering from injury, she emphasizes the need for patience and grace for herself. “It’s a little confusing at times, and I get that. I need a little grace, and I hope others can offer me that too. After going through so much, it’s undeniably a bit traumatic.”

On a different note, Clark mentioned she doesn’t foresee her back pain becoming a long-term issue. “I’m doing everything I can to ensure I’m in top shape for the next game,” she stated.

Beyond the basketball court, Clark is also preparing to launch her upcoming children’s picture book titled “EXTRAordinary! A Little EXTRA to Reach BIG Dreams,” which is set to be published in November. She describes it as a reflection of her life, which, she believes, resonates with many people.
