Woman, 18, cancels first date at last minute by calling 911, saying man is abusive ex-boyfriend threatening to stab her: Police

An Iowa woman reportedly “flinched” before her first date with a man she met on a dating app. Instead of simply canceling the date, she called 911 and falsely accused the man of being an abusive ex-boyfriend who had threatened to stab her, according to police.

Authorities in North Liberty, Iowa, received a 911 call just after midnight on June 16. A woman told the 911 operator that her violent ex-boyfriend was in her home and threatening her.

“She reported that he had threatened to harm her,” court documents state.

The woman claimed the man was the father of her unborn child and had sent threatening messages saying he would “hit, punch, kick and stab her,” according to an affidavit obtained by police. Law and Crime.

Police responded to the residence and confronted a man leaving the home, and began a “thorough investigation.”

However, the man explained that he had never met the woman in person, only matching with her on a dating app about a week earlier, and that the two had arranged to meet at the woman’s house that night, but she never answered the door.

The unidentified man was detained by police for more than an hour.

He said communication has recently shifted from dating apps to texting.

After investigators reviewed text messages between the two, police determined that “the conversations indicated he was honest and had in fact met with this woman.”

The woman, meanwhile, reportedly told authorities she had known the man for two years, that he had not left her alone, and that she was pregnant with his child. She claimed he had subjected her to violence and threats, court documents state.

According to the affidavit, during her third interview with investigators, the woman, 18-year-old Sumaya Thomas, finally admitted that the accusations against the man were false. Thomas reportedly confessed that she was “shy” away from dating the man. According to North Liberty Police, she made up the accusations against him in the 911 call.

According to court documents, Thomas told investigators police would not help him unless he faked a more dire or urgent situation.

Thomas was charged with two counts of falsely reporting an indictable offense to a public authority and one count of falsely reporting a 911 call. Korea CRGShe was arrested and later released from the Johnson County Jail.
