Santa Monica Faces Rising Violence with Latest Homicide

This past Saturday, a woman was tragically killed in a violent incident at a residential facility for adults with mental and developmental disabilities in Santa Monica. This incident occurred just days following a fatal shooting near the Santa Monica Pier.

The city has now recorded its fifth homicide in 2026, already exceeding the total of four from all of last year, prompting serious concerns about the uptick in violent crime.

Police received a call around 5:21 p.m. regarding a woman needing medical assistance at The Manor, located at 1905 Pico Blvd. When officers arrived, they discovered an adult female with severe injuries. Despite attempts by paramedics from the Santa Monica Fire Department to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to neighbors, the woman was found unresponsive in a shared bathroom after being attacked. While the specific details surrounding her death remain unclear, authorities confirmed that a male suspect was taken into custody by 8:45 p.m.

Investigators have yet to release the identity of the suspect or the circumstances leading up to the fatal attack, but officials have stated they are not looking for any additional suspects.

Detectives and forensic experts are actively probing what they are treating as a homicide. The incident took place within The Manor, which has operated since 1965, providing room, board, care, and supervision for mentally ill and developmentally disabled adults.

Located near Santa Monica College, The Manor has faced criticism from local residents and has been the subject of frequent police calls.

New data from law enforcement highlights a significant increase in police activity across Santa Monica, revealing that up to July 4, arrests surged to 2,656—an almost 70% rise compared to the same timeframe last year. Interestingly, even with a 4% drop in calls for service from the community, police-initiated activities have escalated by 27.5%.
