A Texas woman said she had an unpleasant interaction with a stranger at a bar she frequents with her husband, and tests revealed that someone had apparently tried to drug her, after her husband downed her drink and suffered the adverse effects.
“He wanted to hurt my wife.”
Daniel Zuniga and his wife Melissa He told KPRC-TV They described a traumatic experience at the Rudyard Pub in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood, a bar they’d frequented for about 20 years.
“It was supposed to be a normal night,” Zuniga said.
He went to pay the bar bill and walked out, leaving his wife alone.
“The drink was right in front of him,” his wife said, “and he grabbed it, stirred it, drank it and put it down.”
As she was texting her daughter, a stranger sat down next to her and said hello.
When she returned the greeting, she said, he replied, “Looks like you need to be with me tonight.”
She said she thought it was creepy so she grabbed a drink and told him she was going to pick up her husband. Zuniga didn’t want to waste her drink so she drank it in one gulp.
“I just shook it,” he recalled. “I gulped it down.”
By the time the couple returned home, Zuniga had become violent and verbally abusive, according to family members.
“We had to drag him in. He was crawling on the floor,” his daughter Natalia said. “I’d never seen him like that before so I just thought he was really drunk.”
Zuniga said he woke up the next day with little memory of that night. He took a street drug test and tested positive for drugs he had never taken. His attacker is believed to have targeted his wife.
“He didn’t do it for me,” Zuniga said. “He wanted to hurt my wife, and that makes me even more angry.”
The couple filed a report with Houston police, and the bar’s owners said employees would assist them in any way they could.
Surveillance footage from the bar showed the man police believe tried to drug Zuniga’s wife, at one point walking closely behind Zuniga while he waited for her to pay the bar bill.
