Neighbors of an Oklahoma woman were shocked to learn Friday that she shot and killed a home intruder.
Bartlesville police said they received a 911 call from a woman saying there was a man trying to break into her apartment, and shortly afterward the woman said she had shot the man.
The man was pronounced dead, adding only that he was 23 years old. The woman told police she did not know the man before the shooting.
Bartlesville Police Chief Daniel Elkins told KOTV-TV Oklahoma law allows the use of deadly force if a resident feels threatened by a home intruder.
“While we are very disappointed, we are glad that no one else was injured in this process. The homeowners felt they had to do what was necessary, but it was ultimately their choice. ” he said.
Police said they questioned the woman and eventually released her, but it was up to the district attorney to decide whether to press charges.
Lacey Robertson, who lives in the neighborhood, told KOTV that one of her children had just walked by her home before the shooting.
“You never know when something like a stray bullet is going to happen because something like this is happening right here,” Robertson said. “I know it can happen, but I never thought it would happen this close to home. There won't be any,” he said. ”
She went on to say she hopes this case will deter other would-be criminals.
“You live in a certain place and you think, 'Oh, I'm safe here.' 'I'm fine,'” she added. However, the world is becoming more and more crazy day by day. ”
Bartlesville is a city of approximately 37,000 people in the northern part of the state.
