Tragic Incident Results in Fatality Due to Stray Bullet in Oklahoma City
On a seemingly ordinary Friday night, 45-year-old Billy Sorrells was at home in Oklahoma City. He was resting in bed while a 12-year-old boy, who was close by, played video games. This peaceful atmosphere took a turn when shots rang out.
According to police, the neighbor, 30-year-old Elisha Kirby, fired a bullet from her gun while standing in her doorway, after apparently getting into an argument. Kirby later mentioned having “anger issues,” and it appears that her frustrations led to this tragic event.
Witnesses reported that the bullet hit a wall and then struck Sorrells. The child heard what sounded like an explosion and quickly turned around, shocked to see Sorrells bleeding from his face.
As the police arrived at the scene, they found Sorrells dead at his front door. Initially, investigators suspected that he might have accidentally shot himself, but the discovery of a bullet hole in the wall changed the course of their investigation.
Sorrells’ family called the authorities after noticing the hole, which led to a deeper look into where the shot originated. During questioning, Kirby confessed to firing the weapon, stating that she never intended to shoot towards Sorrells’ apartment.
“The bullet had to go somewhere,” said a police spokesperson, emphasizing the randomness and danger that comes with gunfire.
Kirby was taken into custody on charges of second-degree murder over the weekend and is expected to be presented in court shortly. This isn’t her first run-in with the law; her record includes a prior arrest related to a shooting incident in February.
The loss of Sorrells, a father, is notably distressing. His death, a result of what many would consider a senseless act, raises serious concerns about gun safety and accountability.
