Prosecutors in Michigan have decided not to file charges against a woman who critically injured a man who attacked her boyfriend.
According to WXYZ-TV, a Detroit station, the incident occurred at a White House Kicks store in Dearborn, Michigan, on Saturday. Surveillance footage that reportedly captured the event shows the couple entering the store shortly before the assault. The video indicates that after the boyfriend interacted with a customer, another man attacked him.
“They started fighting, then the lady pulls out her gun to protect her boyfriend,” a witness, who preferred to remain anonymous, told WXYZ’s Faraz Jahed. “It’s madness, you know.”
The witness estimated that the woman, who is 30 and holds a concealed carry permit, fired three or four shots after her 36-year-old boyfriend was assaulted.
“It seems they had some form of acquaintance before they met in the store, and they clearly didn’t get along, as it escalated into a fight,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin mentioned to WXYZ-TV.
Shahin commented on the choice not to charge the woman, even though the attacker sustained a gunshot wound to the back. “That’s up to Prosecutor Worthy. She knows her responsibilities, and I trust the job she does here for Wayne County,” he said. “Our role is simply to gather evidence and present the case comprehensively.”
While the woman faces no charges, the injured assailant might need to secure legal representation along with managing hospital expenses.
“There’s a chance that charges could be brought against those who instigated the fight,” Shahin noted.
In a separate incident in Columbia County, Georgia, deputies reported that a DoorDash driver shot 29-year-old Benjamin Dasher after he repeatedly pressured the driver to buy him food and then attempted to carjack him, according to WSBTV.com.
In August 2024, police in Tazewell County, Virginia, recounted an event where a 30-year-old man approached a woman and her child in a convenience store and made threatening remarks to the child before a Good Samaritan intervened and shot the assailant, a story highlighted by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
Also in August, Philadelphia authorities reported that a suspected carjacker fired at the driver of a blue Volvo before the driver returned fire, causing the assailant to flee.
In September, Orland Park, Illinois, police responded to an incident where a robber attempted to hold up an armed commuter at a gas station but ended up getting shot. The suspect was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment.
