California High School Volleyball Team Forfeits Match Amid Trans Athlete Controversy
A high school girls’ volleyball team in California gained attention after forfeiting a match against a team that includes transgender athletes. The Riverside Poly High School team decided not to compete against Jurupa Valley High School, though specific reasons for the forfeiture weren’t publicly disclosed. Some parents and school board members indicated that the presence of trans athletes was a key issue.
Peyton McNabb, a former high school volleyball player turned activist, expressed her support for Riverside Poly’s decision. Having suffered a serious head injury during a match involving a male opponent, McNabb lauded the girls for prioritizing their safety over competition. “I admire these girls! They were faced with a difficult situation. They had to choose between their safety and their sport,” she stated. It’s a choice that, unfortunately, athletes shouldn’t have to make.
Two former women’s college players echoed McNabb’s sentiments, commending Riverside Poly for their courage in standing up to a complicated situation. The women’s volleyball team at San Jose State University previously faced a similar scenario, forfeiting several matches amid controversy surrounding a trans athlete on their roster.
Macy Boggs, a former player for Wyoming, shared her support for Riverside Poly, affirming that taking such a stance requires bravery. “Women have fought for us in the past. It’s time to fight through this generation coming,” she commented. The ongoing debate about the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports remains a contentious and evolving issue.
Additionally, female players from the University of Nevada and Reno have voiced their struggles against their school’s policies regarding the participation of trans athletes, while a player, Cia Leely, played a significant role in discussions around these policies.
As the situation continues developing, Riverside Poly’s forfeiture highlights the complexities surrounding gender identity in sports, further fueled by reactions from various stakeholders, including prominent political figures. In fact, President Donald Trump previously addressed the issue, prompting discussions in educational and sports governance about the rights of female athletes in relation to trans participation.
A statement from Jurupa Valley acknowledged the cancellation of the match but did not provide further details. The next scheduled game for Jurupa Valley is against Rim of the World High School.
