Footage circulating online showcases the bravery of two employees at a chemist warehouse who intervened to stop two teenagers from shoplifting.
In the clips shared on Instagram, the two male staff members used their bodies to block the store exit, effectively halting the teens’ escape.
The video starts with a tense moment as one of the shoplifting suspects attempts to negotiate while passing by an employee.
One teen can be heard insisting, “Get out of my face and move,” as the employees maintain their composure and do not show signs of distress.
Another video angle, posted on TikTok, captures one teen claiming they hadn’t stolen anything. The interaction captures the moment well.
During the confrontation, the teenager appeared to be on a phone call, trying to convince the staff to let them go.
Legal Implications
Under Australian law, it’s illegal to detain someone merely on the suspicion of shoplifting.
Detention is only permissible if there is a solid reason to suspect wrongdoing—like witnessing an actual theft.
This practice, often called a civil arrest, allows for “reasonable force” to be used to hold a suspected shoplifter until law enforcement arrives.
Community Response
The public’s reaction has been largely supportive, with many commending the employees for their actions.
One comment noted, “The boy deserves a salary increase. He didn’t even touch her. Well done.” Others echoed sentiments of professionalism and commendable effort.
Some feedback was more critical, questioning whether the risk was worth it.
“Imagine putting your life on the line for a chemist warehouse,” one individual remarked.
Another suggested, “Why not just let them go? The company has insurance for these types of incidents.” A further commenter added that if one doesn’t own the business, it’s unnecessary to act as a hero for a big chain.
