World’s oldest person, a Brazilian nun and passionate soccer fan, passes away at 116

The world’s oldest living person, a Brazilian nun who credited her long life to her faith, discipline, and, interestingly, football, has passed away at 116, as reported by the New York Post.

Sister Ina Canavaro, a cherished member of her community and a well-known figure in Porto Alegre, Brazil, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday from natural causes. Her nephew mentioned that her body “gradually stopped” functioning, and she wasn’t seriously ill when she died.

Born in 1908, Canavaro took the title of the oldest person in the world after Tomikotoka from Japan passed away at the end of last year. She was not only recognized for her impressive age but also for her unwavering commitment to promoting her beloved sports club.

Celebrating her birthdays with cakes shaped like her football club’s home stadium, she became known for her deep enthusiasm, which earned her heartfelt birthday wishes from the club. For her last birthday, she proudly recorded herself holding the team’s scarf.

Canavaro shared with reporters how much she appreciated her team’s ability to unite people.

Her long life wasn’t without struggle; she overcame a battle with Covid-19 in October 2022, becoming one of the oldest individuals to recover from the illness.

The Vatican took notice of her longevity too, as Pope Francis recognized her on her 110th birthday, honoring her dedication to her faith and service to the church.

Until recently, Canavaro was in relatively good health, only occasionally using a walker and maintaining an active lifestyle throughout her life.

With her passing, the title of oldest living person now goes to Ethel Catham from Britain, who is 115.
