Missing Mother Found After 24 Years

A mother of three, who disappeared 24 years ago, has been discovered living a secret life, revealing that she had been struggling with alcohol issues. She avoided family gatherings, which is why her family hesitated for weeks before reporting her missing.

Michelle Lynn Handley Smith was located last week, just a month after she had been arrested for drunk driving. She vanished from her home in Eden, North Carolina, on December 9, 2001, according to court documents.

At the time, her daughter, Amanda Hundley, was a 38-year-old mother who had also lost her job at a veterinary clinic for drinking while on duty.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page noted that it wasn’t uncommon for Smith to be away for extended periods, which contributed to the delay in her family reporting her absence until New Year’s Eve 2001, more than three weeks later.

Amanda revealed that her mother was unhappy in her marriage to Randy Smith, and they had affairs. Unbeknownst to many, Michelle had a significant drinking problem that she kept hidden.

Amanda recalled, “My dad didn’t like that my mom was concealing her drinking. I knew about it, but felt like I had to keep silent out of loyalty.” Randy suspected her drinking but only grasped the extent of the problem after her disappearance.

Randy showed his daughter a small shed filled with empty rum bottles, indicating how serious Michelle’s addiction had become. There were times of tension in the household, but Amanda described her father as a “good man,” despite the absence of any domestic violence reports.

“If she wanted to leave him, that’s one thing, but to leave us… I don’t believe she would do that,” Amanda said, expressing disbelief that her mother could abandon her family.

Authorities found the now 62-year-old Michelle, “alive and well,” on February 20 at an undisclosed location. However, she expressed a desire not to be contacted, leaving her family in shock.

Amanda, now a mother herself, shared her mixed emotions upon learning her mother was alive. “I feel ecstatic, angry, and heartbroken. It’s complicated,” she posted on Facebook. She reflected on whether they could ever rebuild their relationship, acknowledging the pain while emphasizing her mother’s humanity.

Michelle’s other daughter, Melissa Martin, shared her relief at her mother being alive after 24 years but also expressed a wish for her to reach out.

In those years, Randy has moved on, finding a new partner, while Amanda, Melissa, and their brother Randall have all built their own lives with families.

Sadly, Michelle’s mother, Margaret, passed away in November after years of searching for her daughter.

The reasons behind Michelle’s long absence remain unclear. Her brothers, Gary and Kevin, stated they had forgiven her and looked forward to a possible reunion, respecting her current wishes for distance.

Caswell and Rockingham County District Attorney Katie Gregg announced that no charges would be filed against Smith.
