Wrexham Stuns Nottingham Forest in FA Cup Upset

Wrexham pulled off a remarkable upset against Nottingham Forest on Friday, marking a significant victory for the Welsh club.

With actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the helm, Wrexham triumphed in a penalty shootout, advancing to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a thrilling 3-3 draw that lasted 120 minutes. Wrexham’s goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo, made a crucial save against Nottingham’s Omari Hutchinson, ensuring their progression in the tournament.

Ryan Reynolds was in attendance to celebrate the team’s success, high-fiving fans after witnessing Wrexham’s first victory against a Premier League side since December 1999.

The game kicked off with Wrexham taking an impressive two-goal lead, thanks to efforts from Liberato Cacace and Oliver Rathbone. However, Nottingham Forest’s Dominic Higham later narrowed the gap with a header in the 74th minute.

Even though Nottingham Forest had fallen behind, Callum Hudson-Odoi brought them back into contention with a pair of quick goals, leveling the match in the 89th minute.

Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, expressed his thoughts on the tense match, admitting, “I always hope that when this big day comes, I’ll be acquitted. We felt we were unlucky not to win in regular time, and it was deflating. Moving into extra time, it felt like the field and team were accepted, so I had to push myself again.”

Since Reynolds and McElhenney took over, Wrexham has experienced a remarkable climb, achieving promotion to England’s second division consecutively. The win came shortly after the duo sold minority stakes in the club to Apollo Sports Capital.

In a joint statement, Reynolds and McElhenney emphasized their commitment to building a sustainable future for the club with a mix of heart and humor. They expressed their ambition of eventually reaching the Premier League while staying true to the community, indicating Apollo as a partner who shares their vision.

They also shared their excitement about Apollo Sports Capital CEO Al Tairis joining the Wrexham family, looking forward to what lies ahead.
