A West Virginia man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son.

A judge sentenced Walter Richardson, 36, of Fairmont, on Monday during a brief hearing, WBOY-TV reported. Richardson was charged in 2021 with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of a child. He pleaded no contest to the murder charge at his trial in December.

The boy was found unresponsive at his home in March 2021 and was pronounced dead several days later. Police said in a criminal complaint that the man suffered a head injury, a lacerated lip, a broken tooth and bruises.

The boy’s mother, Ashley Allen, pleaded guilty to child neglect charges and was sentenced last year to five to 35 years in prison.
