Wynton Hall tells Maria Bartiromo that we need to outpace China in AI while avoiding becoming like China.

Wynton Hall, the social media director at Breitbart News and author of the recent book Code Red: Left, Right, China, and the Race to Control AI, discussed the necessity of outpacing China in the AI arena during an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Sunday. “Our goal should be to defeat China without emulating it,” Hall stated. “We certainly don’t want an AI surveillance state. It’s crucial we maintain our core values.”

“A world dependent on China’s AI for both economic and military purposes isn’t what we want,” Hall added in his conversation with Fox News. He mentioned that his book, Code Red, launched on Tuesday, highlights one major challenge for Americans: “the human capital in our ongoing arms race with China.”

“If we can reach what’s termed ‘recursive self-improvement,’ or RSI, then whoever achieves it will gain substantial power over areas like cybersecurity, weapon systems, and critical infrastructure,” he clarified.

Hall reiterated his point by emphasizing, “We ought to defeat China without adopting their methods.” He expressed a collective aspiration: “Living in an AI surveillance state isn’t appealing for anyone. It’s imperative we uphold those foundational principles.”

He also remarked, “This competition is significant.” He noted with relief that there’s growing bipartisan acknowledgment regarding these stakes.

“What guidelines do we need for interactions with AI?” Bartiromo queried. “Are we purchasing robots that could resemble something from the Terminator movies?”

Hall acknowledged this concern, stating, “It’s a valid worry. We absolutely need proper safeguards to avoid unintended effects.”

“When discussing autonomous AI, we must ensure there’s a mechanism for humans to intervene. A kill switch is vital,” Hall elaborated. “This applies to warfare too. Commanders must be able to deactivate these systems for the safety of their troops.”

“However, this is a rapidly changing landscape,” he mentioned. “We need to be prepared for this intricate, strategic game of advancing in the AI race.”

Responding to Elon Musk’s speculation about humanity being outnumbered by robots by 2040, Hall agreed, saying, “Elon is spot on. The growth of humanoid robots is accelerating quickly.” He pointed to ‘Moravec’s paradox,’ indicating that tasks easy for people can be challenging for machines, suggesting the timeline might be shorter than expected.

The discussion also addressed the ongoing tensions between the Pentagon and Anthropic about AI control. Hall stated, “There’s significant political context surrounding ‘Anthropic’ that we’re overlooking. Figures like President Trump and Secretary Hegseth recognize the importance of lawful AI use.”

He added, “Understanding human nature is crucial since it drives considerable financial flows and political connections that aren’t widely known.” This topic is explored in detail in his book Code Red.

During Bartiromo’s interview, they navigated various facets as AI’s reach expands across daily life. In Code Red, Hall examines the effects of AI on nations, economies, and personal lives.
